What to Expect During Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Posted .

If you are bringing your child into our office for their first dental visit, there is nothing you need to worry about. First visits are generally meant to help your child feel comfortable in the dental chair now and in the future. During the first visit, you can expect the following:

A welcoming dental team
When you bring your child in for their first visit, it gives our dentist and dental team the chance to create a lifelong friendship with your child. Once this friendship forms, your child will trust our dental team and will feel more comfortable going into the dental office for their following appointments.

An easy dental exam
If your child would feel more comfortable, you are more than welcome to sit in the dental chair with them while the dentist performs an easy dental exam. When your child is ready, the dentist will examine your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw. Dr. Rust will check for tooth decay, gum tissue problems, and an improper bite. If there are any dental issues, the dentist will use this chance to begin treatment right away.

A simple dental cleaning
If it’s needed, the dentist or hygienist will deeply clean your child’s smile as well as provide a fluoride treatment. These treatments are very beneficial because they help your child grow into a strong and healthy oral cavity.

An educational conversation
During the appointment, the dentist will talk to you about a variety of dental topics, like:

• A good oral hygiene routine
• Oral habits, like thumb and lip sucking and tongue thrusting
• Fluoride needs
• Proper nutrition
• Teething
• Developmental milestones
• Future appointments

Talking about these topics will help you understand your child’s dental needs, and it will give your child have the best oral health possible.
